This book is essential for everyone…not just boyscouts or boys even, it is full of practical advice on just about everything… The original Boy Scout Handbook standardized American scouting and emphasized the virtues and qualifications for scouting, delineating what the American Boy Scouts declared was needed to be a “well-developed, well-informed boy.” The book includes information on the organization of scouting, signs and signaling, camping, scouting games, and a description of several scouting honors. Scouts past and present will be fascinated to see how scouting has changed in the ensuing years, and how it has stayed the same…. More >>
Boy Scouts Handbook: The Official Handbook for Boys , The Original Edition

I ordered what was described as a current boy scout handbook and a copy of the original boyscout handbook. what I received was two copies of the original boyscout handbook with two different covers. I was disapointed because this was a christmas present for my son and he did not get what he had wanted.

I purchased this book on accident alongside another reprint of the same 1911 manual, and had I purchased it alone, I probably would have looked upon it more favorably.
Unfavorable Points:
The cover is cheesy, and was part of the reason I thought it was the *current* manual (my fault), while the *other* one I got had a more nostalgic cover that was more representative of the contents.
The Images looked like poorly photocopied versions of the original, and they looked too much like a cheap attempt at piecing together the book in a layout program (where the other book actually professionally matched the image grays and whites to the rest of the text, making it look more like a real reprint).
The book was also much more pricier than the *nicer* version. Had it been less expensive than its better-made counterpart, I probably would not have been as disappointed.
Favorable Points:
There are more (original) ads in the back of this one than the other version I purchased, so that was nice … and it DOES include all the pages from the original manual.
Overall:
I really hate to provide an unfavorable review, but this version of the reproduction is poorly made, has an uglier cover and costs more than the other reproduction of the manual. It doesn’t take a whole lot of talent to print copies of public domain or historical material (so I’m not attacking the publisher’s writing or artistic abilities), but this reproduction certainly could have been done much better, as its big-publisher competition shows.
Were there to be any revision of this reprinting in the future, I would suggest editing the images so they would print better, eliminating the cheesy embossed lettering on the front cover (or, even better, reprint the original cover), and maybe adding some additional material (old photos of scouting, an additional section of other reprinted scouting materials, etc) to make its higher price more palatable.
